Service

All students are required to participate in the Christian Service Program.  

Senior Mission Project
Using their high school service as a starting point for their paper and presentation, Seniors reflect on how they have lived out the mission of AWHS and have become "morally responsible and socially aware" citizens and are ready to serve local and global communities.    

Through the Community Service Learning Program, students in Grades 7 & 8 are exposed to the needs of a society through various types of service work. Students will learn about and prepare for the specific theme of their service day inside of their respective Theology class.

Students participate in class days of service during the school year.

Students in Grade 8 perform 10 hours of community service on their own.  Students will follow the outreach service guidelines in the student handbook and should have their service site pre-approved by Campus Ministry or their Theology teacher.

Each student will perform 10 hours of service on their own at the service site of their choice. (before March 1st )

After each day of service, every student will write a short reflection paper on their experience. The topic and key questions for the reflection paper will be based around the theme of the day of service.  At the end of the student’s CSL experience, students in Grade 8 will participate in the cumulative project to show what they have learned through their service work.

When students are seeking to complete their service,  they must adhere to the following school guidelines:

All service work MUST: 
FIRST & FOREMOST:

• Be completed at non-profit, not for profit, and 501c3 agencies
  SECONDLY, all service work MUST:
• Uphold the mission of the school by helping students become “socially aware and morally responsible”
• Be the giving up of “one’s own time” to serve
• Be through the direct interaction with others (unless approved by Campus Ministry otherwise)
• Focus on serving the poor and vulnerable for upperclassmen
• Focus on any aspect of social justice for underclassmen

IN GENERAL:
Performing an action for free, does not make it community service

*  Service cannot include filing, office work, babysitting, shoveling snow,        housework, or yard work for family, friends,  or neighbors
*  Service cannot be done at “for profit” organization or union, ie. performing “free labor” is not service
*  Service cannot be done for any family members. 
*  Service cannot be done at home (i.e. babysitting, snow shoveling, yard work, fostering animals.)
*  Service cannot be completed during a liturgical service
*  Service cannot be done online or for online platforms. (see Campus Ministry)
*  Students cannot receive any type of compensation for service. (i.e. money, free food)

Students are reminded that they are looking for Christian Service hours where they are working or performing to help others less fortunate than themselves. Acts of charity and acts of kindness (i.e. raising money for worthy causes, donating to drives, filling out online surveys, giving money to charity, telethons, raffles, walking or marching in parades) are not considered to be outreach service.
