BLUE (and Gold) – RIBBON CHAMPS!

In every sense of the words, our 2019 Girls Basketball team are blue - ribbon champions. Once again, they were on the court at the Fleet on a run for another State championship title. There’s nothing like a Garden Party ( yes, it will always be the Garden for basketball zealots) and it was a party of two skilled CCL teams ready to battle in the MIAA Semi-finals. The winner would advance to the State Championship game.

Williams (19-3) displayed the talent and grit they have shown all season taking the lead in the first quarter. St Mary’s of Lynn battled back and the game was a contest of matching baskets. At halftime, the Lady Bishops were down by a point. Their usual game confidence was never absent and the “white out” throng of fans added to the frenzy that brought the team to a fourth quarter where the jumbotron scoreboard recorded a tie of 59 – 59 with 22 seconds. A 3 pointer with five seconds remaining in the game gave the win to St. Mary’s. The season ended and the opportunity to compete for a State title slipped away but the strong performances of Jessica Knight with 24 points and 14 rebounds; Monica Spain’s 11 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists and Megan Marcel’s 11 points were championship worthy. The Team left the court to the grateful applause of fans, family and friends. Athletic Director Gordie Mc Clay reflected on the past season: “We are so proud of our Girls basketball team and what they have accomplished in the gym and in the classroom.”

The uniforms will be turned in and many of the girls will get ready for a spring sport. For Senior Kaitlyn Smith (Hull) she looks back on the season as “ one of the best because I had the opportunity to play with my best friends. I can’t thank my coaches and teammates for enough for the best five years of my life. I’ll remember this team and all the great memories we had throughout the years. No matter what, this team will always be my second family. I can’t wait wait to watch the team grow as players and people. I know the team coming up will put in the best effort and work for another successful season. Keep up the great work girls. Love you all!”

Congratulations to the 2019 Girls Basketball Team! They represented the very best of Archbishop Williams High School athletics. This season, like many others, will be one that will hold a special place in our sports records books.
