Mrs. Joanne Adams has financial savvy and she wants her Economics students to be savvy as well. Joanne is passionate about “making learning as practical as possible”. With that goal in mind, she arranged for her students to attend the Junior Achievement Stock Market Challenge. At the challenge, students would experience a program of a stock market simulation with every 60 seconds representing a day of trading. Beginning with a hypothetical account balance of $500,000, students “were provided hands on experience regarding stock trades based on financial data that changes by the second. Mrs. Adams was delighted that students “learned how to read stock tables, understand how and why stock prices can change, then buy or sell their holdings. One hundred and seventy five students from local high school participated adding to the competitive atmosphere.”

To prepare for the Challenge, students were engaged by the accounting firm of Price Waterhouse and Coopers instructors who visited their classroom for five sessions. Lessons in the work of the Stock Market, dividends, portfolios, publicly traded companies and reading a stock chart were shared with the Economics class. The prep classes paid off as the Archbishop Williams team placed 10th out of 32 teams that included Braintree High School, Newton North and Xaverian.

Can you imagine the impact of the day’s program on our students? They are knowledgeable and ready to be bullish with the stock market as they navigate their financials futures.
