Reconnecting at the BACK TO SCHOOL BARBECUE
By: Kathy Habel
The temperature was hot and steamy. Yet, the soaring numbers did not quell the enthusiasm that could be felt in the air as AW families gathered for the traditional back to school family barbecue. As hamburgers sizzled and bottles of water were consumed, students gathered on the lawn for Frisbee games and tables filled with families reconnecting or getting to know one another for the first time. The event is a great way to introduce new families to the spirit of community that is Archbishop Williams High School. Administration and faculty were there to support the Parents Support Board that hosts the evening and to meet new students and parents and say “hello” to returning students and their parents.
A very special part of the evening is the return of alumnae with their soon to be Bishops! There is no greater compliment for the school those years later a Mom and a Dad want their son or daughter to walk the same corridors they once did as a high school student. Paul Healey and Gina Pokaski Healey, Class of 1989, could not be more excited that their daughter, Cate is wearing an AW uniform. Their excitement might just be surpassed by Cate’s, who is the first in the Healey/ Pokaski family to carry on the tradition. Cate’s aunts, Sue and Beth, also graduated from Williams, so she is steeped in the blue and gold. As Cate enters 9th grade, she shares she is “looking forward to making her own memories… playing soccer and getting on stage.” Mom Sue supports Cate “having her own story”, though she feels a pinch of nerves as Cate starts this important journey of high school. Dad Paul is feeling the same pinch. “It’s wild! I feel like I was just here and now its Cate’s turn – crazy.” But all the Healey’s agree that it is the best kind of crazy.
