Braintree, MA – Archbishop Williams High School is pleased to name Mr. James Dolan as its Head Boys Basketball Coach. Dolan is also the school’s Head Baseball Coach. He succeeds Coach Brian Holden ’90.
Dolan has coached basketball at the high school and college level for more than 20 years, most recently serving as Weymouth High School’s head coach from 2003-2015. He won more than 100 games and a Bay State League title at Weymouth, and was named BSL “Coach of the Year” in 2007. He was chosen the Massachusetts Basketball Coaches’ Association “Division 1 South Coach of the Year” in 2011.
Dolan served as an assistant coach under Coach Holden last year. He commented, "It was a great experience to coach alongside Brian. I am thankful that he brought me into the AWHS basketball family and I look forward to continuing what he started.”
Dolan has worked basketball camps and clinics around the country, including at Boston College, Harvard, BU, UMass, Duke and Davidson. No stranger to providing the best training opportunities for student-athletes, Dolan has owned and operated “Weymouth Summer Hoops”, one of the South Shore’s premiere and longest-running summer basketball camps, for over 30 years.
This fall at AWHS, Dolan has also served as an assistant Boys Soccer coach under Head Coach Brian Mitchell.
“Coach Dolan is a valued member of the Archbishop Williams coaching team. Coaching our 14-9 Baseball team in his first season last year, assisting with our soccer program and now leading our Boys Basketball program, Jim will continue to put his mark of excellence on Bishops Athletics”, said AWHS Athletic Director Gordie McClay. McClay added, “We are excited to have Coach Dolan leading our student-athletes on both the Court and the Diamond.”
AWHS President Dennis M. Duggan, Jr., Esq. ’70 commented, “We thank former coach, alum and Hall of Fame player Brian Holden for his outstanding service and leadership of our Basketball program and wish him well. We are very fortunate that Coach Dolan, who assisted Brian last season, can continue our proud basketball tradition. Jim has proven to be a valued member of our coaching staff and we are pleased to involve him in another leadership role where he can directly impact the lives of even more of our student-athletes.”
Dolan stated, “I am excited to lead the Bishops Boys Basketball program. I am very thankful to President Duggan, Dr. Volonnino and Coach McClay for their support and confidence in me. My family is blessed to be a part of the AWHS community. Having two sons here, James ’18 and Connor ’20, we fully believe in what it means to be a Bishop and understand that the success of our programs begins with the great people here. I love working with our student-athletes. AWHS is truly a special place and I can’t believe how lucky I am.”
Coach Dolan lives in Rockland with his wife Laurie and their three sons, James, Connor, and Aidan. He attended Weymouth North High School and received his BS from Bridgewater State University and MS from Concordia University. He is a member of the faculty teaching Physical Education at Weymouth High School.
