Shot Putter McRoberts finishes Second Consecutive Season Undefeated!

If senior shot putter Julia McRoberts of Hanover decided to skip the spring track and field season, she could rest on her laurels for a successful high school athletic career.

Senior Julia McRoberts of Hanover was the leading shot putter in the Tri-County League, and finished her second consecutive season undefeated.

Senior Julia McRoberts of Hanover was the leading shot putter in the Tri-County League, and finished her second consecutive season undefeated.

For winter indoor track, McRoberts was the leading shot putter in the Tri-County League; she finished her second consecutive season undefeated; she qualified for and finished sixth in the State Class Meet for the sixth of seven seasons since her freshman year while setting a personal best for the season (33’11”).

“Julia's specialty is the shot put, although she has also mastered the discus and javelin throws, and is a strong performer in some of the sprinting and relay events,” said her coach, Bryan Van Dorpe. “She has been a model of consistency and has performed at a high level since her freshman year, which is exemplified by her qualifying and competing in the State Class Meet in six of her first seven seasons here at Archbishop Williams.  As a captain the last three seasons, Julia is often a mentor to many of the young throwers at AWHS, showing them the drills and training necessary to master the track and field throwing events.”

A shot putter since 8th grade, she was a Tri-County League All-Star the past two winter seasons. She finished 8th in her freshman year and 3rd in her sophomore year in the Auerbach Freshman/Sophomore Meet, a statewide competition. In spring track in the CCL (Catholic Central League), she qualified for the State Class Meet her freshman, sophomore, and junior seasons. She was a CCL All-Star her sophomore and junior seniors, and co-captain her junior season.

Julia's personal bests in the shot put are 33'10" (Winter) and 35'7.5" (Spring).

Van Dorpe has been McRobert’s coach throughout her high school career. “He’s a great coach,” McRoberts said. “He knows how to help us with long distance, sprint, jumps, the throw. He really cares about the team a lot, and you can really see it in the way he sets us up for everything.”

McRoberts said her senior year has been bittersweet. “This is my last time doing this,” she said. For each meet, she added, “it’s my first last meet.” She’ll especially miss the support and camaraderie of her team members. “I was really close to the team this year,” she said. “It’s great having a meet go well and nice having a good team behind you.”
With the spring season just days away, McRoberts is looking forward to competing again in the shot put, plus the discus and relays. Her goals? Another undefeated season and a spot in the All States!
