Congratulations to senior Chigozie Sumani of Randolph who recently broke the Archbishop Williams High School record for the 55 Meter Hurdles during league competition at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center. Sumani, who finished with a time of 9.36 on January 2, holds the fastest time in the Tri-County League this year and the third fastest time, all-time, in the league.
"It's cool. I didn’t know I broke the record until afterwards,” Sumani said of the record, which was last set in 2000. “I was just trying to do my best that day."
Sumani, who is a team captain, is also a member of the 800 Meter Relay Team which set a record (1:54.17) in 2017. She also holds a second place ranking for 2017-18 in the Tri-County League in the 55 Meter Dash, and fourth place in the High Jump.
“I’m trying to make the record for the 55 meter dash since I made it in the hurdles,” Sumani said.
Competing in the Catholic Central League at Spring Track, she tied the AWHS record in the 100 Meter Dash (12.4) in 2016, set a record in the 100 Meter Hurdles (17.4) in 2017, and was a member of the 400 Meter Relay Team, which set a record (52.19) in 2016.
"Chigozie has the opportunity to finish her AWHS career as one of the top female sprinters in the school's history,” said her coach, Bryan Van Dorpe. “Her unique talents in both the sprints and hurdles at both 55 and 100 Meters, and her strong competitive nature, make her a top performer in the Tri-County and Catholic Central leagues. I believe Chigozie will finish her athletic career at Archies with strong performances at the league and state level."
Sumani said she appreciates coach Van Dorpe, who has been her coach for four years. “We work together so well,” Sumani said. “He’s a great coach. He helps us with our practices and pushes us to do our best!”
Sumani has been a four year athlete at AWHS - Indoor Track 11,12; Spring Track 9-12 (expected); Varsity Soccer 9-12; Junior Varsity Basketball 9,10 - and is looking forward to continuing her athletic career in college.
