Reading Assignments

Each student in Grades 7-12 (excluding AP students) must read the book listed for the grade that he/she will be in for the 2023-2024 school year.  There will be a quiz given in September.  

Students enrolled in AP English DO NOT need to read these books...please refer to your specific assignments below. 

 

AP Composition & Literature

Student enrolled in AP  Composition & Literature should complete the following assignments:

1. Read How to Read Literature Like a Professor by Thomas C. Foster and complete the study questions that go along with the book (refer to the link below)

2. Purchase 5 Steps to a 5 Workbook 2023 (must purchase the ELITE student edition available on Amazon or at local bookstores) and read Chapter One.

3. Read the novel Wuthering Heights - Bronte 

4. Read the novel Slaughterhouse Five - Kurt Vonnegut

Students will take an objective test on How To Read Literature, Wuthering Heights, and Slaughterhouse Five week one of school and complete a written exercise for one of the novels.

The assignments will be due the first week of school.  Students will take an objective test on How To Read Literature, Wuthering Heights, and Slaughterhouse Five week one of school and write an essay on one of the novels.

AP Language

Students enrolled in AP Language should refer to this link for their summer assignment.  

Math Packets

Newly enrolled students in Grades 7, 8 or 9 should complete the packet below. 

Returning AWHS students entering Grades 8 or 9 will not have a summer math packet to complete.  

Students in Grades 10-12 (excluding AP students) will not have a summer math packet to complete.  

All packets will be due the first week of school. 

AP World History Modern

Student enrolled in AP World History should complete the following  three assignments.  The assignments will be due the first week of school.

AP U.S. History

Students taking Advanced Placement U.S. History for the 2023-2024 school year are required to take the free Gilder Lerhman Institute of American History AP United States History: Strategy and Techniques online course.  Please click on the link to register--PLEASE NOTE THE DEADLINE TO REGISTER IS JUNE 30th, 2023. 

This course will require approximately an hour of Zoom once a week for six weeks. The course is free to take and it is expected that all students entering APUSH in the fall of 2023 will have the certificate of completion for the course. 

AP Government

7/15/23--There is an alternate AP Gov assignment listed below.  Please note:  only one summer assignment needs to be completed.

Science

Current AWHS students enrolled in  any AP Science Courses (Biology, Chemistry or Physics) should be aware of the required summer assignments.  New students enrolled in an AP Science course should contact Science Department Chair, Mr. Whitehouse, to receive the required summer assignments.  Mr. Whitehouse can be reached at rwhitehouse@awhs.org.  Please use this link to login to Schoology to access the assignments.
