AWHS is committed to keeping our student-athletes safe. Any student-athlete who exhibits signs, symptoms, or behaviors consistent with a concussion trauma (such as loss of consciousness, headache, dizziness, confusion, or balance problems) shall be immediately removed from the practice or competition and evaluated by a trained professional. If necessary, the student will be referred to the Emergency Room for further evaluation and treatment. The parent/guardian of the student will be notified when a concussion is suspected.
The National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) “Concussion in Sports for Students” course is a state-mandated course for all student athletes (and one parent) to complete prior to tryouts for any sport, and must be completed once a year. Both the student-athlete and one parent must email their certificate of completion to: concusscert@awhs.org. You may also upload the certificate to your school Magnus Portal when it becomes available to you.
Research conducted by professional and collegiate sports experts strongly suggests the need for baseline data to aid in the assessment of head injuries. AWHS utilizes ImPACT — a computerized program that has been implemented effectively across high school, collegiate, and professional-level sports to allow for the safe return of athletes to sports following a head injury. As part of our concussion management program, all new students are given a baseline ImPACT Test before participating in athletics. Returning students are required to establish a new baseline every two years.
In the event of a head injury, pre-trauma data is compared with subsequent ImPact testing data to help determine appropriate follow-up care and the potential for the athlete to safely return to play. This online test can be conducted at home by the athlete and it is sent out via email by our Athletic Trainer 3-5 days after the student registers for a sport. Testing takes approximately 30-45 minutes to complete online.
