The history of Archbishop Williams High School is steeped in tradition and honor. Named after the Most Reverend John Joseph Williams, the fourth Bishop and first Archbishop of Boston who is credited with establishing the parochial school system in Boston, the school exemplifies his vision of a robust Catholic education system.
AWHS offers a rigorous six-year academic program with a curriculum designed to challenge and inspire students at all levels. Beyond academics, the school boasts a vibrant athletic tradition, with numerous league, regional, and state championships.
Over the years, AWHS has grown in size and scope. A new International Students Program was established, and a 7th and 8th grade “Middle School” program, which has grown to over 160 students, was added in 2014. Campus improvements and facilities upgrades totaling more than $20 million have further enriched the educational experience for students, faculty, and staff alike − including the new, multi-million dollar Healy Sports Complex added in 2022, and an integrated Learning Center in 2023. This summer, renovations to the Counseling Department will provide a state-of-the-art space that creates a welcoming, functional and comfortable environment for students to receive academic, social/emotional and college planning support.
Mindful of the diverse paths to success that students may choose to pursue, AWHS has also experienced a renaissance of sorts with its Arts and STEM programs. A new music studio, as well as a renovated auditorium and art classrooms, encourages students to showcase their creativity and theatrical talents. Meanwhile, a highly-competitive Robotics Team has ignited students’ passion for science and engineering, pushing the boundaries of their innovation and problem-solving skills.
In 2018, AWHS received a glowing 10-year re-accreditation report from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, underscoring the school's commitment to excellence. Looking ahead, AWHS's future shines brightly. With a strong academic and financial foundation, recent transformational renovations, and plans for further improvements, the school is well-positioned to meet the needs of its growing student body.
As it continues to build on its rich heritage, Archbishop Williams High School remains committed to nurturing the next generation of leaders, scholars, and responsible citizens, and looks forward with excitement and anticipation to another 75 years of excellence and inspiration.
