Scholarships

The following awards are available to underclassmen and women, and vary in amount depending on available funds and student need.  There is no formal application process, the recipients are chosen based on faculty and administration recommendations.

The Administrators' Award
This one-year scholarship is awarded on the basis of character, academic achievement, contribution to our school and financial need. It was created in 2007 and is funded by our faculty in the name of our administrators. It is awarded at the Junior Awards ceremony for the senior year. 

Paul W. Anderson Scholarship
The scholarship may be awarded to a freshman student athlete in football, hockey or cheerleading. 

AWHS Irrevocable Trust Award
Preference is given to students who are residents of Quincy and have high academic potential. Financial need may be considered. The donor of this unique award, created in 2010, shall remain anonymous but recipients are asked to remember the benefactor in their prayers.  The donor's hope was that the recipients would remember his generosity and, in turn, respond generously to the school when their own situation in life permits.

Archbishop Williams Educational Alliance Scholarship
Created in 2010, this award is meant to honor a student who attended one of the AWHS Alliance feeder schools and whose family is in financial need. The student's actions must embody the meaning of the words unity, teamwork, cooperation and family.

Elaine Batting Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded based on financial need to a junior in good standing who exhibits a love of foreign language, participates in sports and is a hard worker overall. It is awarded at the Junior Awards Ceremony for the senior year. 

Sister Mary Blunt Award
The scholarship was established as a suitable memorial to the work and wonder of Sr. Mary Blunt, a long serving member of the faculty until her death in 1976. The scholarship is to be awarded each year at the close of school to a student completing his/her freshman year, and who has maintained academic excellence and used his/her potential to the fullest. This award follows the student until graduation.

Bob Barrett Scholarship
Awarded to a female or male basketball player.

Braintree Buddies Scholarship
The Braintree Buddies Program was established to foster community and mutual support between students of Archbishop Williams High School and the Project Prove program of Braintree High School. The criteria for this award focuses on dedication, consistent work ethic and passion that an AWHS sophomore has extended to the Braintree Buddies Program.

The Class of 1959 Scholarship
For a well-rounded Junior.

The Friendship Scholarship
Created in 2009 to honor of the lifelong friendship between Sheila O'Leary Elledge '63 and the late Louisa McShane Cunio '63, this award recognizes their collective commitment to community service. The recipient must have demonstrated school spirit and service to the community.

The Cassie Dorrington Scholarship
Cassie's dream was to walk the halls of Archbishop Williams High School with her twin and classmates. Cassie, who passed away in 2000, loved the school from the minute she visited as an eighth grader. Although she only physically attended the school for two weeks, she was a part of it in many other ways. The scholarship is awarded to a kind and gentle person who likes to have fun, but takes academics seriously.

The Marion V. Gillis Scholarship Award
Awarded to a student with demonstrated school spirit and in financial need.

The Fallen Heroes Scholarship
For a student whose parent is in active duty.

The Luigi & Helena Mariano Memorial Scholarship
This award is given to three students (sophomore, junior and senior) based on financial need, character and citizenship, as well as leadership and academic success.

Michael  Mark Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is given to a student who has given time and talent to the AWHS community and beyond, and whose citizenship and compassion resembles Michael's, who was a member of the Class of 1982.

Matthew McLarnon Memorial Award
The recipient of this award will be someone who displays sportsmanship and a strong character, on and off the field. Any student who will be a junior or senior member of the AWHS football team the following year is eligible. The recipient need not have a high GPA, but should be a student with a good work ethic and most of all is a well-liked and respected member of the AWHS community.

Al and Rita Nazzaro Scholarship
The Nazzaro family created this scholarship to honor their parents who sent five sons to Archbishop Williams High School: Michael ‘75, Thomas '76, James ‘78, Stephen '82 and Martin '83. The scholarship is meant to recognize a junior who has financial need, entering his/her senior year. The student(s) must show determination to work hard in all classes/subjects (but does not have to be honor roll student) and should be involved in school activities.

Edward J. O'Brien, Jr. M.D. '59 Scholarship
This scholarship was created by Dr. Edward O'Brien, a member of the class of 1959, to commemorate his 50th reunion. It is awarded to an ice hockey player, preferably from Quincy, who has a solid GPA and comes from a family that demonstrates financial need.

The Joel Ryan Memorial Award
This scholarship was created in 2009 through his mother's bequest and is given in memory of Joel Ryan, a member of the class of 1962. It is awarded for the recipient's senior year to a student whose family has maintained a close relationship with the school, who has a strong academic record and who has exhibited a financial need.

Robert E. Ryan Spirit Award
This scholarship is given in memory of Robert "Rocky" Ryan, an AWHS athlete and member of the class of 1965. A First Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force, he is a hero who gave his life in 1971 in defense of liberty during the Vietnam War. It is awarded to a junior football player going into his senior year.

The Marjorie Sarofeen Memorial Scholarship
For a student who loves to sing and is a member of the choir.

The Patricia "Patty" Shea Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is given in memory of Patty Shea, a member of the Archbishop Williams High School class of 2010, who passed away in the spring of her freshman year. This scholarship will be given to member of the class of 2010 at spring assembly until graduation.

Dorothy M. and Henry H. Skill Memorial Scholarship
This award is given to a student who is industrious and highly-motivated, who is not the recipient of numerous other awards and who is contemplating a career in public communications. The senior year recipient is selected by the English department chairperson in conjunction with the principal. 

William J. Sullivan Memorial Scholarship
This award was created to provide scholarship assistance to a freshman who has siblings attending AWHS. 

Mr. Robert J. Swain Scholarship Fund
Robert "Bob" Swain was the plant manager at Archbishop Williams High School for 30 years and was a friend to faculty, staff and students. After his death, family and friends created this scholarship to perpetuate Bob's love and devotion for the Archbishop Williams community. The fund will provide financial assistance to AWHS students who have a financial need. The recipient(s) should be someone who does some work/study employment at the school and is of good standing.

Sister Ann Susan Villa Scholarship
The Sister Ann Susan Villa Scholarship is named in honor of our long-time and much loved former librarian/media specialist who held the position for 32 years. The scholarship stipulates that the award may be presented to either a junior or senior who has reached his/her potential, who has shown compassion throughout the day during his/her time at Archbishop Williams High School, and who cherishes and uses library information/technology resources.
