AWHS earns MIAA Academic Excellence Awards for all 13 Fall Sports

BRAINTREE, MA, January 6, 2011...Archbishop Williams High School, a leading Catholic co-educational high school located in Braintree was recognized by the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) for academic excellence for all 13 of their fall sports teams.

The MIAA is an organization of 377 high schools, who sponsor athletic activities in 33 sports. More than 200,000 young men and women compete annually in approximately 100,000 competitions among MIAA member schools. In order to encourage and support the academic accomplishments of student-athletes, the Board of Directors sponsors the Team Academic Excellence Award. The Association recognizes all members of teams that maintain a combined grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 and above. There are two award categories for which teams are eligible for recognition: The Gold Level designation for a GPA of 3.00 to 4.00 and Silver Level for a GPA of 2.50 to 2.99.      

"I continue to be proud to see our student-athletes striving for excellence both in the classroom and on the field," commented AWHS Athletic Director, Joseph Francis. Archbishop Williams High School's thirteen fall sports teams achieved 9 Gold Level and 4 Silver Level distinctions. That is a perfect record! "Our student athletes are truly students first," said Dr. Carmen Mariano, President of AWHS. "Am I proud to announce that every fall team we sponsor achieved an academic achievement award from the MIAA? You bet I am proud!"

Recognized for their collective academic achievement the following the team awards were:

            Freshmen Football - 3.07 (Gold)
            Girls JV Soccer - 3.17 (Gold)
            Girls Varsity Soccer -3.08 (Gold)
            Boys Varsity Soccer -3.01 (Gold)
            Varsity Volleyball - 3.21 (Gold)
            JV Volleyball - 3.16 (Gold)
            Boys Varsity Cross Country - 3.14 (Gold)
            Girls Varsity Cross Country - 3.24 (Gold)
            Boys Varsity Golf - 3.36 (Gold)
            Varsity & JV Football - 2.51 (Silver)
            Varsity Football Cheerleading - 2.82 (Silver)
            JV Football Cheerleading - 2.97 (Silver)
            Boys JV Soccer - 2.81 (Silver)
