Archbishop Williams announces International Initiative

This fall, AWHS will proudly welcome as many as six international students into its program for the 2010-2011 academic year.

Recently, AWHS was approved by the US Office of Homeland Security to issue up to 20 student visas, allowing the addition of 9th, 10th and 11th grade students from throughout the world, in the hope they will matriculate and eventually graduate from the school.

Special support programs have been put in place at Archbishop Williams High School and will include orientations for students, faculty and staff, as well as weekly meetings with the incoming international students.

Kate Madden, Director of Admissions, is the designated school official who coordinated the start-up program.  The international students will come from China and Korea; they will live with local host families, most of whom have at least one child attending Archbishop Williams High School.

“At Archbishop Williams, we celebrate the importance of education, friendship and diversity,” said Madden.  “We believe that opening our school to a student from another culture will not only enhance their life, but the lives of our students, as well.”

“The world is its own best classroom and I am very pleased we will be opening our school’s classrooms to the world,” said Dr. Carmen Mariano, President of AWHS. “These students are bright and they are brave. They are traveling thousands of miles away from home in order to be with us. They will learn from us, and we will learn from them; inside the classroom and out.”
