AWHS proudly announces that numerous world language students attained national recognition for excellent performance on the 2010 National Spanish and French Examinations. Students from Archbishop Williams High School earned gold, silver and bronze medals along with several honorable mentions in the National Spanish Exams. 

 “Attaining a medal or honorable mention for any student on the National Spanish Examinations is very prestigious because the exams are the largest of their kind in the United States with 125,915 students participating in 2010,” said Kevin Cessna-Buscemi, National Director of the Exams. 

The following students received medals of recognition for their performance on the National Spanish Examinations: 

Grade 11:  Gold Medal - Gahensha Pinckombe, Stoughton; Bronze Medal-John Remmes, Rockland

Grade 10:  Silver Medal - Timothy Andrea, Holbrook

Grade 9:    Bronze Medal - Christine Chase, Cohasset; Carly Poh, Bridgewater; Periklis Sarakiniotis, Randolph  

Honorable Mentions in the category of Excellence were received by:      

Grade 9: Blayne Baker and Jennifer Roa, Braintree; Bryan Campbell, Dylan Conneely, Shane Moriarty and Brian Plevock, Weymouth; Jonathan Contreras, Stephanie Durosier, Chikemey Ikuanusi and Leigh LaFond, Randolph; Mary Gallagher, Daniel Hoff and Cole Ruley, Plymouth; James Daley, Marshfield; Miranda Milne, East Bridgewater;  Helen Murphy, Quincy; and Jake Reardon, Scituate. 

Grade 10:  Scott Anderson and Melaina de la Cruz, Hanover; Alex Gomez, Lindsey Crowley, Khelsea O’Brien, Grace Rosario, Weymouth; Tara Howard, Andrew Mason and Brian Nguyen, Randolph; Ryan Flynn and Kathryn Welch, Braintree; Kristen Ahstedt, Marshfield; and Alexander Boyle, Hingham. 

Grade 11: Dennis Marquis and Scott Marquis, Plymouth; Kevin Narine and Rehana Rupan, Randolph; Danielle Conneely, Weymouth; and Katarzyna Spitalniak, Quincy.  Students from Archbishop Williams have a history of high achievement on these exams and were taught by Spanish Teachers Joanne Adams, Beverly Ekstrom, Ken Palladino and Mary Roman. 

AWHS also announces the results of the 2010 Grand Concours.  Sixty French students, taught by Diane Jackson, took the National French Contest Exam in March of this year.  Receiving National and Eastern MA recognition were the following students:                                   

Grade 9: Rebecca Jost and Richard Chaudhary, Quincy; Alexandra Hansen, Canton; and Alanna McCabe, Braintree.                          

Grade 10: Zachary Jost and Malia Tupe, Quincy; Whitney Lee of Dorchester and Malia Tupe, Quincy.                                   

The National Spanish and French Examinations are administered each year in grades 6 through 12 and are sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese and the American Association of Teachers of French.  

 “The success of our students is a reflection of the strength of our foreign language program,” said Beverly Ekstrom, Chair of the Foreign Language Department.

 “We couldn’t be more proud of our students for their outstanding performance in these prestigious language examinations,” said Dr. Carmen Mariano, President of AWHS.  “To be recognized in these national examinations is a true testament not only to their abilities, but also to their remarkable teachers.”
