The third annual Night for the Arts was held on Friday, May 14 in the School's auditorium. AWHS students showcased their talents during an evening of live music, dance, and visual art. Organizers of this event included many students in tandem with their teachers, Bob Brearley and Jim Coughlin.
"While I have only been a part of the Night for the Arts for two years, the reactions I have seen/heard by the viewers over that time tells me what a success the night is," noted Mr. Coughlin. "It's a pleasure to see the work the students did being 'ooo-ed' and 'aaahhh-ed' over by the people who come in to view their work. It is also a personal pleasure for me to know I was a sort of vehicle that helped to give the opportunity to the students to realize the abilities they might not have thought they had. To have viewers ask me if any of the work (on display) was for sale is quite a compliment for both me and for the students who did the work. The kids did a great job!"
Each year alumni return for the night, to share their art work and their college or work experiences in the field of art, according to Mr. Coughlin. "It is both enlightening and impressive. It is always a pleasure to welcome our alums back!"
Mr. Brearley began the Night for the Arts three years ago when a group of students approached him about it. "I can say that it has been an honor and a privilege to be part of this event. Celebrating the arts is essential. Aristotle, the great Greek philosopher, said ‘Art has the power to move the soul.' I agree. In so many ways, the artists in this school are the soul of our community."
