Archbishop Williams High School students participate
in National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine
BRAINTREE, MA, ISSUED OCTOBER 8, 2009…Two seniors at Archbishop Williams
High School, a leading Catholic co-educational college preparatory high school located in
Braintree, recently participated in the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine.
Honored by the invitation were Jessica Galvin and Lauren DiBona, both of Quincy, who flew
to Atlanta, Georgia this past summer to take part in the nation’s foremost program in premedical
education for high school students.
The National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine introduces outstanding high school
students to the world of medicine; the 10-day program familiarizes students with
professionals from several of the nation’s top medical centers in addition to faculty from
renowned institutions of learning.
The Forum challenges students to learn about a broad range of topics, including educational
requirements, career options, clinical practice and complex ethical and legal issues facing the
medical profession today. Students discuss global epidemics, cures for life-threatening
diseases, life as a resident, medical specialties and primary care with physicians and patients.
“My experience in Atlanta taught me a lot about being a doctor,” said Jessica Galvin. “Both
Lauren and I were given many opportunities over the course of the 10 day program to learn
about the exciting and challenging medical profession; it was a real honor to be selected.”
“Not only did I learn a lot of information about the medical field – including having the
opportunity to watch a knee surgery, visiting hospitals and participating in hands-on activities
– I also made many friends from all over the country,” said Lauren DiBona.
“We could not be more proud of Jessica and Lauren,” said Dr. Carmen Mariano, President of
AWHS. “It has been said that ‘the only real power in life is to help someone and the only real
honor in life is to save someone.’ Medical leaders help and save many. These two wonderful
young women have what it takes to be such leaders.”
