Area Six Regional Science Fair winners announced

BRAINTREE––On Thursday, May 7, 2013, Archbishop Williams High School hosted its fourth annual Area Six Regional Science Fair for 6th, 7th and 8th grade students.

Nine schools participated in the Fair, with 88 students presenting their science projects in the AWHS gymnasium. Participating AWHS Alliance schools were: Holy Family of Rockland; Sacred Heart of Weymouth; St. Agatha of Milton; St. Francis of Assisi, of Braintree; St. Francis of Xavier of Weymouth; St. Jerome of Weymouth; St. Mary of the Hills of Milton; St. Paul of Hingham; Quincy Catholic Academy of Quincy.

The Area Six Regional Science Fair winners are:

Grade Six:

1st Place: Joseph Curran, "Are Fingerprints Hereditary?" , Holy Family, Rockland

2nd Place: Natalie O'Brien, "Disinfection Dilemma", St. Paul, Hingham

3rd Place: Elizabeth Saltzman, "Heat Wave", St. Mary of the Hills, Milton

Grade Seven:

1st Place: Kyle Donahue, "Adhesive Test", Holy Family, Rockland

2nd Place: Brendan Pike, "Soil vs. Hydrophonics", St. Francis Xavier, Weymouth

3rd Place: James Rogers, "Orientation and Face Recognition", Sacred Heart, Weymouth

Grade Eight:

1st Place: Kishan Patel, "Viscosity", Quincy Catholic Academy, Quincy

2nd Place: Gavin D'Souza, "Up, Up, and Away", St. Paul, Hingham

3rd Place: Tracy Neville, "Fans and Temperature", St. Francis of Assisi, Braintree 

Group Projects:

1st Place: Andrew Bucca and Kyle McCarthy, "The Third Wheel", St. Jerome, Weymouth

2nd Place: Allison Carey, Marissa Gallotto, and Bridget Simmons, "Dream On", St. Agatha, Milton

3rd Place: Catherine Yameen, Julie Cormican, and Caitlin Canavan, "Concussion", St. Agatha, Milton

"Once again, for the fourth consecutive year, it was a pleasure and a privilege for AWHS to provide the sky in which so many young stars could shine," said Principal Dr. Carmen Mariano. "There is no doubt that science education is alive and well in our school and in each of the nine Alliance schools whose students carried their colors into competition. I commend the contestants and their teachers for their excellence and thank our teacher and student judges for their interest, involvement and hard work."
