Weekly Update
January 27, 2017

Grade 8 Day of Service: Our entire 8th Grade class volunteered at From Cradles to Crayons as part of their Day of Service. The boys sorted books in a multi-step process, and ended up with over 500 book bundles for kids. The girls created outfits at the clothing area, from shelves organized by age and gender; seven outfits, four undershirts, two sweaters, one pajamas, and one set of socks were one pack. They made 127 clothes packs! Well done!
Class Meetings

At the turn of the semester, we took a moment this week to evaluate how the year has gone in a series of class meetings. Each day this week, members of the Administration met with a different grade level to review our expectations for an Archbishop Williams student. We discussed the need to exert leadership, foster good habits of learning, and to encourage each other to make good decisions.

These meetings also provided an opportunity for some mid-course corrections, particularly in student discipline. These often focused on seemingly small, but collectively significant things such as how students address faculty members, care for the cafeteria, and iPad use.

Of course, we also discussed uniform. Students needed to be reminded on different aspects of our uniform that have slipped a little, including:
  • all outerwear must be approved Archbishop Williams apparel. No scarves are permitted.
  • only brown or black dress shoes, Sperrys, or black sneakers are permitted. No moccasins or fleece-lined shoes (that some have taken to call “bedroom slippers”)
  • no socks may be worn over the girls’ tights.
  • boys shirts are to be tucked in always.
These messages will be reinforced (and enforced) throughout the semester in order to help make our second semester even better than the first!
Basketball "Skills": This week marked the start of Physical Education as part of our 9th Grade Skills Class.
Catholic Schools Week: Mass on Wednesday!

Starting Monday, we will celebrate Catholic Schools Week at Archbishop Williams! The theme for CSW is the same as last year: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service and there is a full schedule of events to mark this week.

On Monday, ambassadors of the AWHS community will travel to their Catholic elementary school and donate books to the school library. The schools and students are as follows:

Friday is Faculty and Student Appreciation Day. It will be a dress down day and cake will be served at lunch. Students are encouraged to wear their Patriots gear in support of the big game next Sunday.

Happy Catholic Schools Week!
Protect Your Identity!: Mrs. Lauren Pedretti, Community Outreach/Financial Literacy Specialist at Quincy Credit Union gave a guest lecture in our Personal Finance class this week on identity theft. Mrs. Pedretti has been a familiar face at AWHS, working the Quincy Credit Union table at past Back to School Night and Parent Conference events.
Welcome Mr. Fontecchio

Archbishop Williams welcomed a new faculty member this week to the Theology department: Mr. Christopher Fontecchio. Mr. Fontecchio is replacing Mrs. Newell, who was working a first semester maternity leave assignment for Mrs. Lawlor. Mrs. Lawlor decided shortly before Christmas to remain home with her (adorable) baby Jack. Unfortunately, Mrs. Newell was unable to stay for the second semester. Both Mrs. Newell and Mrs. Lawlor will be missed by our students

We are excited to introduce Mr. Fontecchio. He brings a wealth of teaching experience and a penchant for technology-infused education (ask about Chain-Gang Questioning from today).  He is also a second-generation Archbishop Williams teacher. His mother, Mrs. Susan Fontecchio, was a longtime member of our Science department in the 1990s.

Welcome to our community.

Help Wanted: Host Families
We are in need of two families to host students from Spain for their one-week visit to our area as part of our Spanish exchange program. We have a longstanding partnership with a Catholic school outside of Madrid. Our students will visit the school over April vacation and they will travel here afterwards. These historically have been wonderful students and it is a real cultural opportunity. Please contact Mrs. Joanne Adams if you are interested.

Congratulations Maggie
Senior Maggie Slein continues to make an impact to help protect the environment. On Wednesday, she participated in a day of lobbying as part of her fellowship with the Alliance for Climate Education, a non-profit that seeks to educate students on environmental issues. Today, she learned that she was selected for a poster presentation at the Southern New England Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS) at Boston University on Friday, March 2.

We are very proud of you!
Upcoming Fundraisers for the Kate McCarthy Scholarship

From Campus Ministry:
As part of Catholic Schools Week, we are holding a Winter Clothing Drive.  Donations of new or gently used coats, boots, pants, shirts, sweaters, pajamas, hats, and gloves can be dropped off in Campus Ministry by February 1st.  (sizes newborn to adult medium) Donations will be brought to Cradles to Crayons in Brighton.  Cradles to Crayons provides children living in low-income and homeless situations with the essentials they need to thrive – at home, at school, and at play.

Congratulations (New) Class of 2021
Letters were mailed this week to all accepted students who are invited to join our current eighth graders as part of the Class of 2021! We are excited by all of the talent in this applicant pool that may only further enrich our community. In addition to a letter, they also received a welcome email accompanied by this video. Thank you to everyone who participated in making this film.

We hope when you watch this you feel a little of that excitement all over when you learned that you were accepted.

And it is still not too late to apply for rolling admissions for all of our grade levels. So if you know someone who would thrive here, please contact our Admissions Director Mrs. Brett Marcotte.

And Lastly: Happy Chinese New Year

Saturday is the Chinese New Year, inaugurating the Year of the Rooster. We would like to wish everyone in our community celebrating this festival a prosperous new year. While the official day is tomorrow, in China this serves as their holiday season with celebrations lasting a week (and often informally stretching into a couple more). Let us in particular remember our international students who will be spending this time thousands of miles away from their families.
As always, if there is anything we can do to better serve you or your child, do not hesitate to ask. Thank you for being part of our family at Archbishop Williams.

Pax,

Dr. V
Michael R. Volonnino, Ph.D.
Principal
All American: Freshman Nick Tardanico competed for Team USA over Martin Luther King weekend at the International Bowl in Dallas, Texas. We still think he looks better in Blue and Gold.
