Weekly Update
September 16, 2016

Fr. Chris Hickey invited the class officers to gather around the altar for the Liturgy of the Eucharist at Mass today.
Our God is an Awesome God
Our first full week of the 2016-2017 school year is now complete and it was excellent. Fr. Chris Hickey celebrated an incredible Mass that included a rousing, acapella rendition of Awesome God. His homily focused on how lucky we are to be at Archbishop Williams and offered advice to incorporate God into becoming lifelong learners. Fr. Chris left everyone with the message to “Pray your way to a better day. Pray your way to a better grade.”

After Mass, the students were treated to ice cream at lunch in honor of the week’s completion.

Back to School Night
This Thursday is Back to School Night. Unlike past years, we are holding one combined event for Grades 7-12. The event will begin at 7:00 PM in the Auditorium and should be over by 9:00. Please arrive around 6:30 to leave enough time to pickup your child’s schedule and get settled. Also, please plan to park in the two visitor lots of the school. Do not pull in behind the school as all of those spots are reserved for faculty and staff.

To facilitate the distribution of schedules, registration tables for Grades 7 & 8 will be outside the Main Office and the tables for Grades 9-12 will be directly outside the Auditorium. It will make things easier for Grade 7 & 8 parents to come into the main doors of the school, while Grade 9-12 parents can go directly into the side Auditorium doors.

We will have plenty of National Honor Society and National Junior Honor Society students on hand to provide direction around our campus.

After a brief presentation in the Auditorium, you will be “dismissed” to follow your child’s schedule. It will be based on a Day 1 schedule and you will go in order for all seven periods. Homeroom will not meet. “Classes” will be seven minutes long.

This is a wonderful opportunity to meet your child’s teachers and learn the general expectations for each course. It is not a forum to discuss individual concerns (there simply isn’t time). Of course, all of our teachers are happy to make an appointment to meet with you at a mutually convenient time.

Lastly, our main building has four floors and Nazareth Hall has three floors. Please wear a pair of comfortable shoes to go up and down stairs. Refreshments will be available, courtesy of Quincy Credit Union.

We’re looking forward to welcoming all of you to our campus. It is going to be a fantastic evening.

Dedication of the Al and Rita Nazzarro P’75 ’76 ’78 ’82 ’83 Science Lab
This past Thursday, we held the formal dedication of the new Al and Rita Nazzarro Science Lab. Mr. and Mrs. Nazzarro sacrificed to put five children through Archbishop Williams and the generosity of their family helped make this magnificent space possible. This State of the Art Science Lab—especially the “whiteboard wall” is now the showpiece classroom for the school and a prototype for future classroom renovation.

The simple dedication ceremony, with remarks by President Dennis Duggan ’70, AWHS Trustee Stephen F. Nazzarro ’82 P’11 ’14, Dr. Volonnino, longtime Chemistry teacher Jane Funderburk, and Science Department Chair Ray Whitehouse, was attended by AWHS Administration and faculty, including the entire science department.

We cannot wait to see what creativity is sparked by this new lab.
Al and Rita Nazzarro Lab Dedication (From Top to Bottom, L to R): Chemistry teacher Mrs. Jane Funderburk and Science Department Chair Ray Whitehouse explain the history and significance of the new lab; the Nazzaro family, all AWHS alumni, pose at the entrance to the lab; the plaque outside the classroom.
Getting More Out of Schoology
One of our goals this year has been to expand the use of Schoology, our Learning Management System. Many of our teachers are starting to use the more advanced features of the program beyond posting homework. Assignments are being submitted electronically, teachers are creating discussion boards, and utilizing the online quiz and test function.

Just this morning, Mr. Robert Mallon in his 7th Grade Geography class gave a classic U.S. States Map Quiz completely on Schoology. This is just another way that AWHS is providing a true college preparatory education.

Catholic High School Fair—This Sunday 11-1
On Sunday, AWHS will host a high school fair for all of the neighboring Catholic high schools from 11 AM – 1 PM. This is the first major admissions event that we will host for the year. The first Open House is Sunday, October 23.

Word of mouth is the best advertisement, so if you know someone that would benefit from an AWHS education, encourage them to attend.

School Closed Friday: Professional Development
AWHS will be closed on Friday, September 23 for a faculty professional development day.

Parent Mixer—Tuesday, Sept 27
On Tuesday, September 27, the Parent Support Board will host their annual Parent Mixer in the AWHS Cafeteria from 7-9 PM. It is a free event with food and libations served. It’s a great way to meet your fellow parents and discuss how we can all best support the school!

Have a Great Weekend!
With the first full week in the books, classes are now starting to pick up some steam. I hope everyone gets some rest this weekend as this five-day week can be a little draining. Good luck to all of our athletic teams in action this weekend.
As always, if there is anything we can do to better serve you or your child, please do not hesitate to ask. Thank you for choosing Catholic education and being part of the Archbishop Williams community.

Pax,

Dr. V.
Michael R. Volonnino, Ph.D.
